Drug & Alcohol Rehabilitation Philosophy
Shardale programmes recognise that there are differing recovery treatment models. Our choice theory model does not refer to people as alcoholics or addicts, but maintains that behaviour is always chosen, either consciously or unconsciously.
To support people on their recovery journey, Shardale programmes provide the right environmental conditions for change: warmth, acceptance, trust, empathy, together with straight talking and of course humour when the situation dictates.
Our goal at Shardale is to support those people who have already made the decision to stop being dependent on mood altering substances and addictive behaviours and who now want to rebuild their lives by making healthy, constructive, and need-satisfying choices.
Essential for these choices to be effective are appropriate and healthy relationships with other people who have similarly decided to undertake a journey of recovery. The programmes delivered at Shardale would traditionally be defined as a Non Hierarchical Democratic Therapeutic Community Model, where staff consider themselves members and part of the daily process, not detached from how the community operates and functions.
About Shardale Therapeutic Communities
Taylor House was purchased in early 2013 and following a 180,000 refurbishment programme it was opened to our first programme participants in May 2013. The programme provides 36 places for individuals with a history of substance misuse including alcohol, illicit, prescribed, and other mood altering substances. Currently, Taylor House is the largest stand-alone drug and alcohol residential treatment facility in the North West of England.
The Taylo House Therapeutic Community is located in Lytham St Annes and provides alcohol rehab for the effective treatment of alcohol addiction. Our clients are referred by social services departments in local councils in Lancashire and Wyre Councils but we also accept self funding users. As well as residential alcohol rehabilitation, Shardale also offer day care facilities for up to twelve individuals.
Programme participants at Shardale projects are encouraged to be active in their own treatment programme, to identify and work through consequential and often traumatic life events, and, with the support of the Shardale community, to develop the life skills and behaviours that will enable them to lead a life without recourse to mood altering substances. Whilst Shardale staff members support and guide the whole community to address their physical, psychological and emotional needs, in a non Hierarchical democratic therapeutic community the majority of decisions are made by the community as a whole. Shardales unique adaptation of the therapeutic community model is designed to encourage both personal responsibility and decision making, thus enabling all individuals to discover a more independent and resourceful life.
Shardale Programme Locations
Shardale projects are located in Preston, Lancashire and St Annes on the Fylde Coast south of Blackpool. Potential participants are typically referred for assessment by their Local Authority, usually in conjunction with their community based treatment service provider as detoxification is required. Some of our programme participants are privately funded and they will refer themselves directly to the Shardale Admissions Team.
