I completed my Bachelors Degree in History from the University of Plymouth in 2008, achieving 1st class honours. Despite my degree being in History, I have always had a keen interest in IT and decided upon leaving University to try and find a job in Web Design. I quickly found a junior position in Taunton, which I worked in until the company was bought out by a newer firm, Media Orb, who then took me on as a Lead Developer. I worked at Media Orb for 4 years during which time my responsibilities and skills gew, along with the company itself, having earned a promotion to the Head of Development at the end of 2013.
As I am developer alongside being a designer, I am ideally placed to ensure my websites function perfectly on every device and also look great while doing so. Now that responsive websites have become the norm, a designer can no longer assume their designs will be viewed on a desktop computer with a broadband connection, large screen, mouse and keyboard. Instead today's designer must be 'device agnostic', understanding and utilising the principle of progressive enhancement so that they can ensure the user experience is consistently good for all users, no matter what device they are using.
For many businesses, websites are purely marketing tools created with the sole purpose of increasing business. Websites only serve as effective marketing tools however, if they themselves are marketed properly; the internet has become a very competitive place for businesses looking to promote themselves online which is why it is vital that every advantage that can be gained over your competitors is utilised.
