About Mafana
Mafana
means 'Hot' in Malagasy (the language of Madagascar) where the majority of our products are sourced.
set out to improve the lives of people living in poverty in Madagascar by providing regular work at fair reward. We wanted to deliver a range of high quality, hand crafted, 'branded' goods to independent retailers in Europe. These products would not only be fairly traded and environmentally sustainable, but would create self reliance and thus self esteem for our producers and their dependents in Madagascar.
Our product range currently consists of bags, baskets, some ethnic jewellery and some clothing; all carefully sourced.
Mafana Ethos in Practice
BUT there is a big difference between Mafana and normal commercial enterprises. In addition to creating regular, fair-paid work, Mafana also gives a proportion of its income to charities based in Madagascar directly involved in building schools & medical centres or bringing fresh water to rural communities.
In addition we can, at modest cost, enable small cooperatives to start production or become more efficient (see case studies), so if a raffia weaving loom is needed, we buy it. If raw materials are needed we fund them. We think this is a unique approach to production and the supply chain partnership. This also allows the craftsman of Madagascar to help themselves develop trade in a fair and equitable manner.
By buying or selling Mafana products you are directly contributing to both humanitarian and environmental projects in Madagascar, one of the poorest countries in the world.
