After several years of fundraising, sufficient funds were raised to enable the charity to fund an Alexander’s Nurse (a specialised children’s palliative care nurse). Since then Alexander’s Care Team has grown and now provides a comprehensive children’s hospice service throughout Berkshire and the Thames Valley and is currently supporting 101 children and their families.
Our supported children (aged 0-19 years) have a range of complex physical, neurological and medical conditions, a significant proportion of whom have physical, mental and/or audio-visual disabilities. There are over 600 children throughout Berkshire alone and a further 670 children from the surrounding counties with life-limiting or life-threatening conditions that could benefit from our service. We are the only charity from Berkshire providing a hospice service in the community.
It has always been the vision of Fiona and John to build a children’s hospice in Berkshire and now this dream is becoming a reality. A six acre plot of land was gifted to the charity by a local landowner and planning permission was passed in 2012. Construction began on the site, near Maidenhead in Berkshire in September 2015 and is now complete. Once fully equipped, the hospice is planning to welcome families by way of a phased opening, commencing with Day Care in the New Year.
The hospice will be able to provide a much wider range of services and activities than we can currently offer giving families the choice of care they want for their child. It will be delivering respite care for the whole family so that they can enjoy quality time together, as well as end of life care with a dedicated suite with a hug room and temperature controlled child’s bedroom where parents can spend precious moments with their child after they have died. There will be overnight accommodation for up to six children with all the necessary care facilities, treatment rooms and provision for families to stay overnight. The hospice will include a hydrotherapy pool, music therapy and sensory rooms, games room and a Creative Learning Zone. There will be a large kitchen/dining area where families can socialise and eat together.

The sun shone all day in contrast to the wind and rain the day before and there were 145 riders having a day out with their horses. This was a 15% increase on 2016 and thanks to your generosity and the support of our sponsors, we are thrilled to tell you that we have raised over £8,000. In the past year, Quest RDA has been able to achieve its goal of increasing the provision of riding sessions for children with a variety of disabilities and special needs. We have five wonderful horses – Bassett, Ben, Magic, Diablo and Jack – who provide wonderful therapeutic benefits and a lot of enjoyment to our riders. We rely on fundraising from events such as the Sponsored Ride and every penny of your contribution goes towards the upkeep of the horses and the special equipment we need. Thank you!
Shine provides specialist support from before birth and throughout the life of anyone living with spina bifida and/or hydrocephalus, as well as to parents, families, carers and professional care staff. Shine enables people to get the best out of life.
Shine is a registered charity, which was formed in 1966, initially to help families and individuals affected by spina bifida and hydrocephalus.
As a local company we are very pleased and proud to be able to support and Sponsor our local under 7’s football team.
We are run exclusively by volunteer parents and other people willing to give up there own time to coach boys and girls of all ages and abilities within the club.
