If someone asked Steve to describe himself he would probably say he was a bit of a restless soul with a passion for solving complex problems. It all started as more of a happy accident than any sort of career planning. Halfway through an engineering degree he discovered that computers were much more fun and interesting than electronics. This was confirmed by his results; straight distinctions in all of the computing modules, so IT was the way to go!
After learning programming in the usual way (writing games at home) and spending time working with networking, hardware, software and supporting clients at a computer reseller he ended up at a software publisher. It was here that he got into professional programming after developing a new tool to fill a gap in their product set.
After that Steve moved to a leading bespoke development house, which is very much at the sharp end of development as everything is a one off and the company lives and dies by its last project. While there he moved from developer to project manager, to development manager, finally ending up as their principal business analyst and consultant.
Eventually the realisation came that it's not about fitting into a specific role. Instead it's about adding value to organisations by using his 25 years of experience to solve the tricky problems that others find just too hard and tend to put to one side to deal with later. These are usually problems involving complex technology and processes, where the systems fail to effectively support the business and introduce more friction than function.
"His translation of business process into requirements for IT projects has been widely praised within my team, along with his willingness to help and his strong attention to detail. To quote one member of my development team, Steve is "the best we've worked with"."
