I love working in sport and helping a variety of people, from the complete novice through to the elite athlete, to fulfil their true potential. My belief is that the power of our mind in sport is huge and if we can learn to work with it and use it to enhance our performance we will be a unstoppable. A lot of my work is influenced by the mindset research of Dr Carol Dweck. I employ a Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) based model and an approachable and supportive manner to help people to recognise their true potential and to develop skills that they can implement daily to achieve their best in their sport.
I regularly employ my own psychological techniques during racing and training to make sure that I achieve my highest performance potential. I am always working towards a goal, pushing myself harder to reach and exceed my goals; and believe that having mental strength helps me to perform to the best of my ability in everything that I do.
Prior to my Masters, I worked as a Mental Health Therapist within the NHS. Specialist training for this role involved a Post Graduate Diploma in Mental Health Nursing from the University of Southampton, followed by a Post Graduate Certificate in CBT based interventions from the University of Exeter. I worked with people from varied backgrounds suffering from depression, anxiety, stress and other personal psychological difficulties. The pressures of daily life makes these issues increasingly common, and it was a challenging but hugely rewarding role which has given me excellent experience for my consultancy work. The theme running through all my work is helping people to achieve their goals and keep in good health, both mentally and physically.
At Performance Mind we are passionate about helping people to be the very best that they can be. Whether you are a complete novice or an elite performer in your sport, we can help you to enhance or change your mindset to fulfill your potential.
There are times in our sport where for example our motivation suffers, we struggle to cope under pressure, our focus falters , confidence in our performance is lost, those periods where our mind takes over. We provide a space to help you become more aware of these times and we will work with you to develop techniques and strategies to increase your self- awareness and move forward in your sport.
We recognise that everyone has goals but sometimes sticking to these goals can be hard. By working with us we will help you to identify and make the changes that you want, and we will provide the support in the longer term to make the change sustainable.
Gemma is passionate about sport and helping people to believe in their ability to reach their own potential.
