We have been running our business since 1991 from the stunning World Heritage city of Bath. So, 2012 was the year we celebrated our 21st birthday. That's plenty of time to ensure that your day spent with us is truly memorable.
Just to put your mind at rest about the name, Mad Max Tours is a combination of my dogs name, Max and my own name Maddy. For many years Max would travel on all our tours and had a particular fondness for Avebury, which I'm sure you'll appreciate when you get the chance to visit this amazing site. He's now "retired" with many happy memories!
We have 16 seat minicoaches and have deliberately kept our business and our buses small to give you the friendliest and best possible travelling experience. In a minicoach you have the advantage of being able see the countryside beyond the hedges and walls, which would be hidden from view in a car. However, we are still small enough to get off the beaten track and explore the more interesting back roads.
Most of our business comes from personal recommendation and many people return for more! You can see what they have to say on our
Message: I just wanted to send you a quick note... Colin was absolutely amazing today!! I've never enjoyed a tour more, and am extremely thankful the tour was still on with just four people. Please send Colin my heartfelt thanks for making the tour so much better than any other tour I've done. His sense of humor was fantastic :)
The best part of doing a Mad Max tour was the fact that since they only seat 14 people in each bus, you get to explore these amazingly historic towns (Castle Combe and Lacock) that make you feel like you were time warped back many hundreds of years. 5th June
Dear Maddy, My mother Elizabeth Tracy and I took a Mad Max tour with Richard last week (22 July, I think?) to Stonehenge/Avebury/Lacock/Castle Combe, and I wanted to be sure to write you to let you know what an excellent guide we found Richard to be. (I'd been meaning to do this anyway, but ever since taking a tour in Edinburgh with a dreadful guide, I've realized doubly how great Richard was). He told us interesting things, talked (and was quiet) just the right amount, had a good sense of humor, was pleasant, checked in with all of the guests as to how we were doing and whether we were enjoying ourselves, drove skillfully and safely, and offered us good tips on how to maximize our visit. We were thoroughly pleased with the whole experience, and I have already recommended Mad Max (and Richard) to friends! Thanks again, Megan T
Fred and I have returned to the US and are reviewing the wonderful memories we have of our trip to England . We had a wonderful day with Richard, exploring the countryside and Stone Henge. His guidance along the way was invaluable! Thank you too, Maddy, for your recorded commentaries; the preparation was very helpful.
Hi there, Thanks so much for a great tour! We were all thoroughly entertained and educated. It was a huge success! I'll definitely be recommending Mad Max Tours to visitors -'have already started actually! Best wishes, Shannon D
These tours are about seeing amazing places and exploring them, whatever your language. We do have plenty of written notes in the bus on the Stonehenge tours which may be of help. Also at Stonehenge you can get personal audio commentaries in various languages.
Unfortunately we are unable take children who are 3 years or under on our scheduled tours. However, if you are planning a private tour or transport with us we can accomodate younger children.
If you do you'll miss out on the joy of travelling to Bath by train. It's a quick and straightforward journey and you'll see some lovely countryside. Also Bath is too beautiful to miss. If you can, try and stay for at least one night in this stunning world heritage city (in fact you see it at its best early in the morning and after the crowds have gone in the evening). Also if you do our tour from Bath you'll find it's less than half the price of doing a similar tour from London !
On our Cotswold tour it is possible to collect guests from Tetbury. On our Stonehenge tours it may be possible to collect you from Stonehenge and drop you off in Bath (if you are coming from Salisbury). We do also collect from country hotels if they are en route, so please e mail us and we will do all we can to help you with this.
Due to the severe congestion in the centre of Bath we do not collect from individual guesthouses and hotels. However our meeting point is very central and within easy walking distance of many places to stay. If you have mobility problems please tell us and we can make special arrangements to help.
If you want to shop there wll be places on the tour to do so. Our guides know where to find most things and they will be happy to point you in the right direction. We do not take any commission from any outlets.
There are a variety of places to eat and we are sure you'll find something to meet your requirements. Also feel free to bring a packed lunch if that is more suitable for you (although we request that you do not consume food on the bus). On our full day Stonehenge tour we stop at Lacock village which has a selection of historical pubs, a café and a bakery. On the Cotswold tour we stop at Burford, a medieval town where there is a selection of cafes and pubs to choose from. The cost of lunch is not included in the price of the tour.
