Smisby Day Nursery is contained in the original village school building built in 1900. Nicknamed "The Sunshine School" for its large south-facing classrooms it is a purpose built building full of character and charm.
Set in over half an acre of land in a quiet village location close to Ashby de la Zouch, Smisby Day Nursery has a large south-facing garden and secure play area with views over open countryside to the rear, and a secure drop off and collection point at the front, with ample parking.
We are open from 8 AM until 6 PM Monday to Friday throughout the year. The nursery is closed on all bank holidays and also between Christmas and New Year, including Christmas Eve.
A number of early admission places are available from 07:45 each morning but these are strictly limited and must be booked in advance.
To enable us to keep the children secure, but also allow free access to parents and nominated persons, we give parents the key code for the main door. If someone else is collecting your child in an emergency please do not give them the code. Notify the nursery of the arrival of this person and please ensure that they bring some clear identification with them for verification. This will allow the staff to check before allowing your child to leave the premises. We are sure you appreciate our caution in this matter as we will only hand over your child if we are sure that the person collecting them is both the right person and authorised to do so.

Even on a wet day when the children cannot play outside the most popular games on the Wii in the club are the high activity ones, such as "Let's Dance". Personally we believe Banksy got it right! Lets get the children to spend less time on computers and more time doing activity and let us all help to tackle childhood obesity.
We are open from 08:00 until 18:00 Monday to Friday during the school holidays and from 07:45 until 08:30 for the Breakfast Club and from school closing time until 18:00 during term time.
With planning permission obtained in June 2015 we planned to start and complete the build between August and December in order to avoid having to stay in the Village Hall any longer than we had to. We were lucky to have only one day of rain, and because of the massive teamwork by everyone involved we got permission to occupy the building on the 11th of December, three weeks ahead of schedule, and we were issued our completion certificate on 21st December. Liz and the staff pulled together to move everything over and Smizkids started running fron the new build on Tuesday 22nd December.
None of this would have been possible without the labour, support and love of my family - Sheila, Glenn and Laura, who all put in some long hours at times doing some hard jobs. Sheila also took over a lot of my role in the Nursery to free me up to work on the build during the last three months. The staff in the Nursery became masters at solving problems I normally dealt with during that time as well. Ken and Claire, thank you for your unwavering support and sound advice over the last 18 months. Extended family and friends for cheering from the sidelines. Richard - Thanks for just being there.
"Children's behaviour is exemplary. A strong emphasis is placed on promoting positive behaviour and successful methods are adapted effectively to meet the ages and developmental stages of all children. Children listen intently to staff and respond positively to a consistent use of praise and encouragement. Children receive warm cuddles and affection and build trusting relationships which contributes to their sense of belonging. Children make active decisions about their play, making choices as they develop their confidence and self-esteem. They develop an acute awareness of the needs of others as they help each other and learn to share and take turns. They play confidently alone and socially and ask for appropriate help if required"
