Applied Software Engineering (ASE) was formed in 1999 to satisfy an identified need for skilled outsourced development capabilities in the UK, primarily for embedded computer software systems. Client feedback has consistently shown that the service provided has been of high quality, reliable, professional, punctual and cost-effective. Whilst having an extensive range of engineering skills, our personal approach is a key success factor, with a director getting personally involved in each and every project.
Our offices in Crewe and Wrexham provide a base from which we undertake work all over the UK and overseas. Our team has many years’ experience developing embedded software and hardware for a wide range of markets. Our clients range from small start-ups, rapidly needing to develop new products, to multi-national companies, needing major project support, in a wide range of industries.
Most outsourcing companies work on a time and materials basis leaving you with all of the risk (and cost!) of project overruns; we think that’s unfair! At your request we will provide fixed price quotations, and do not look to charge for each and every design change – although if you do want major changes to a project that is different!
Mike Darby has an honours degree in Software Engineering from Imperial College, London, is a Chartered Engineer and the Managing Director of Applied Software Engineering Ltd. Mike has 21 years of experience of design, development, test, integration and installation of safety critical SCADA systems on sites distributed throughout the world, and has developed digital control PCBs for use in medical equipment under the now obsolete safety standard IEC 60601 part 4.
Mike has 20 years’ experience with digital video and seven years’ experience in rail transportation. He has provided consultancy advice to Bombardier for three years on subjects such as systems engineering, BS EN 50128 compliance and automated testing systems. He has project managed and developed a number of SIL-1 rated projects, mostly train-borne CCTV systems, and has also acted as the Verifier and Validator on a previously successful BS EN 50128 SIL-1 project for a Driver Only Operation CCTV system on Bombardier’s Class 379 fleet. He is experienced with a wide variety of programming languages: C, C++, Assemblers, Pascal, Modula 2, VB, PHP, and VHDL and is widely recognised as an excellent problem-solver.
Tim has an honours degree in Pure and Applied Physics from UMIST. He has broad experience over 30 years of developing systems on different hardware platforms, using programming languages including C and C++ and with many communications protocols. He has sought out training with regard to developing software for safety related systems. He has previously been the Embedded Software Development Manager for Remsdaq, responsible for all of the company’s embedded software. Tim has worked developing embedded software in the automotive industry, as well as a wide range of other projects in which embedded software was a critical component. He also worked on the development of an auxiliary power controller for Channel Tunnel trains.
