The company was started by the late Mike Balls in 1971, providing domestic fencing to local customers. It began renting a small section of a yard at Clarkes Farm in Danbury, Essex owned by the English Timber Supply Company (Essex) Ltd. However, it quickly expanded, taking over the entire site, along with the ETS Company Ltd itself.
By the 1990’s the company had evolved even further and it was recognised that more purpose built facilities were needed for the operation and so in 1999 the company relocated to their current location – a two and a half acre site it Witham, Essex.
Since those early days the company has evolved into a genuine ‘one stop’ fencing operation. Not only does it have its own treatment plant, manufacturing facilities and bespoke fence installation service, it also has a successful and well stocked shop that supplies everything that could be needed by its trade customers and the DIY fencer. The scope of work the company now offers ranges from private work through to trade and commercial customers, as well as local authorities, schools and housing associations.
The company still remains a family concern with Mike Balls’ daughter, Sarah Fothergill, now at the helm and her sister Lucie also working in the business. This element of continuity has been an important factor in the company’s success with many of the staff having been with the company for many years. These include Ross Poole, Sales Director, who joined the company in the ‘70’s and has seen it through much of its evolution, as has Peter Hammersley, the company’s Chairman, a renowned timber industry expert.
Whatever changes there may be in the future the company it will always ensure that the traditional family business principles are maintained, with product quality and customer service at its heart and it will never forget its humble beginnings when it was a few tools and a truck and a young man’s vision.
