ABOUT MEDIC MENTOR LTD

Medic Mentor is a national mentoring organisation for healthcare students and professionals. It was established 4 years ago by a group of doctors and medical students with the sole purpose of creating a supportive community and academic network for aspiring and current healthcare students. As a social enterprise, Medic Mentor reinvests proceeds from events, books and summer schools back into the Student Diversity Fund (a fund set up to provide free places to students from low-income backgrounds) and scholarships for medical, dental, vet and psychology students. We also support healthcare charities like Medic2Medic and the Medical Institute of Tamils (MIOT) with their mobile health clinic in Sri Lanka.

Medic Mentor's main focus is on making a change in the medical world through the use of effective mentoring. Our mentoring initiatives have already proven to boost morale amongst healthcare professionals, better prepare university students with their personal professional development and enhance an applying student's knowledge of the career that they are wishing to pursue, so that universities are recruiting more informed and insightful applicants. This is achieved with structured mentoring initiatives, such as the scholarship programme, and online resources such as the weekly webinars. Medic Mentor also eliminates inequalities by giving all applying students direct access to healthcare professionals, and university students and healthcare professionals a chance to develop themselves, by receiving high quality mentoring, as well as an opportunity to be mentors themselves.

Making a Difference...

Medic Mentor is a powerful force for positive change in the medical world. We have established a network of councils to support the work of significant organisations such as Royal Colleges, Medical Innovation Companies and Universities. Medic Mentor is uniquely placed to facilitate these discussions because we are an independent organisation with a wealth of resources, and made up of motivated individuals who want to make a positive impact on our colleagues and the medical world which serves the nation.

How big is Medic Mentor?

Since its creation, we have grown into the UK’s largest medical organisation for aspiring healthcare students and provide mentoring for students from application to graduation. Our network includes secondary school students, parents, teachers, university students, a variety of healthcare professionals, royal colleges, hospital work experience programmes and medical schools.

We now have over 2000 registered Medic Mentors across the UK teaching and mentoring nearly 6000 applying students each year. We work with over 800 UK secondary schools and colleges, and have recently started establishing a school societies network where we help school students set up their own medical society, which is mentored by a Regional Mentor (doctor or medical student), for free.

Unlike other organisations, we cover a broader range of healthcare specialties, provide direct access to doctors and other healthcare professionals, and we mentor students throughout their UCAS applications and university degrees. We also have a ‘pay it forward’ attitude, and most of our applying students become Medic Mentors themselves. In fact, over 80% of our Residential Summer School students received at least 1 medical school offer last year! It is vitally important that our organisation only run events or educational initiatives that truly make a difference to a student's application, or future career, because we want our organisation to grow and we want to retain the most talented individuals and future game changers and leaders!

We know 6000 reasons to join Medic Mentor!

Medic Mentor organise a series of events to support you at every stage of the application process and whilst you are at university. These events enable students, parents and teachers to have the opportunity to network with a range of healthcare professionals and university students (Medic Mentors) from across the UK. Money that is raised from events, funds the Mentors to visit schools, give presentations, medical student scholarships, prizes and publication opportunities, the student diversity fund and support our charitable donations. It also helps us to grow and improve all of the amazing educational resources that support you in applying to medical, dental, vet med, psychology, nursing and biomed courses at university!

New to Medic Mentor? Attending National Weekend conferences will give you a great introduction to our network and equip you with essential knowledge and information needed to make an informed career choice and successful application. This is great for students in year's 10-12 or S3-S5, as well as parents and teachers.

On the 2nd December 2017, Medic Mentor will be celebrating the success of our current and next generation of healthcare leaders. Come along to network with our special guests and meet the wider Medic Mentor community and the organisations that we work with. The Keynote speech is being delivered by Mr Anthony Roberts, Director of Leadership and Innovation at the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons. The awards will be held at the newly renovated Great Hall, at the University of East London in a beautiful Grade 2 Listed building. Registration is £10 and spaces are extremely limited!

Get free access to a doctor or medical student for one hour every week! Our weekly webinars cover a range of topics and gives viewers a chance to ask questions via the live online chat. Get free handouts, keep in the loop with amazing Medic Mentor opportunities, and get continuing support with your application!

We can help you set up (or make better use of) a medics society at your school! Our Regional Mentors will provide you with ongoing support, and the monthly school society bulletins will equip you with useful activities to help run meetings and keep your knowledge and skills up to date. Great for Year 10-13 or S3-S6 students!

Medic Mentor will be running 50 free mock interview events at selected schools across the country. We are currently undertaking selection and shortlisting of nominated schools - so please complete our online form to nominate your school now. Priority will be given to year 13s and S6 students for interview slots, however valuable experience can be gained by students in younger years who volunteer alongside the Medic Mentor team to help run the day - and certificates will be provided!
