does not fit current ways of thinking and doing
Use dynamic decision-making – incorporate tight feedback loops to dismiss, adapt, or construct new models of thinking.
Typically this can happen when there are many different kinds of information that connect in different ways. For example, chemical production of anti freeze relates to safety standards differently to weather patterns or distribution.
Where we are in danger of losing focus, or being overwhelmed we are also vulnerable to feelings of discomfort. New ways of working
Braintoffee activities are training resources designed to provide a safe, engaging and stimulating environment in which to rehearse for leading, managing, or contributing in conditions of workplace complexity, uncertainty and ambiguity.
THIS IS WHERE WE ARE:
IN TOUCH DEVELOPMENT LTD
Putting together these types of activity is what I’ve been doing for my groups working as a training consultant both as an independent and for an international training and development organisation where I worked for over nine years. Wherever I have worked, participants and colleagues have loved the unique impact made by these unusual projects, and, outside my ‘day job’ I found myself being asked to design “something special for this really switched on group – beyond the paper tower or factory simulation projects. They’ve got to be really stretched – but they’ve only got a day – and its got to be at their offices.” “OK,” I’d say, “tell me about these people…” and we’d start from there. 6 -8 months later, we’d be piloting, then going live with another problem-solving task, printed off and enveloped up to be run over and over again.
What started as a hobby, continued when I went part time and has now become my main focus. Braintoffee is a new ‘wrapper’ to take a substantially tried and tested development product, that engages current and potential senior managers to help them understand, perform – even thrive – in ambiguous and dynamic environments, to a wider audience.
There’s nothing I like better than getting a new project up and running. I’m not sure which I enjoy the most, the research into the story line, or discussing how the participants’ experience of the activity could fit into a wider agenda, whether this is curriculum content or business needs. I’m very lucky that I love my work.

How does A Braintoffee Activity help?
The skills identified, developed, and rehearsed in a training environment can be applied directly to unclear situations in the business environment. Individuals, teams and leaders are then less likely to be overwhelmed by complexity, uncertainty and ambiguity. The first step is recognising when they are in those situations and then building capacity by developing the optimum skills and behaviours required for high performance in challenging situations.
Our global connections, expanding technology, interacting currency markets and changing consumer markets and have increased complexity making our problems hard to get to grips with, perhaps better characterised as scenarios and dilemmas rather than clear cut problems.
Braintoffee activities provide the vehicle for the introduction of new ways of working, the development of skills and increased team awareness. Additional support and ideas are available to help meet your programme objectives.
The 4Box model shows how problem situations can vary depending on our how clear we are about the problem, and also how much we know about the solution.
Just do it. No point making a meal of it.
Sense making is important to give shape to the questions that define the problem.
A high level of collaboration, hypothesising, as well as building and challenging ideas enables the situation to be clarified, before a solution is then worked up for submission. The level of problem solving and team work required to operate at this level is high. Critical thinking skills and emotional intelligence are key to success.

“The detailed preparation of the documentation enabled the students to immediately engage with the organisational situation that they were presented with and this focus continued throughout the 2 hours of the case study. The originality of the material provided the students with a challenging situation to consider and their learning was evident through the results that they produced and the high level of reflection in the final discussions.”
‘We use Braintoffee exercises with many of our clients. These exercises are exceptional as a means for leaders to explore the approaches that enable their people to perform in a VUCA environment, and can also help teams to refine the way they work together. The complexity in each exercise provides a deep learning experience for participants that is hard to replicate in any other way. These activities are fun and engaging and often provide a pivotal moment for individuals to refine their leadership and team working practice.’
