Music in Mayfield Ltd

Mayfield Festival of Music and the Arts is the trading name of Music in Mayfield Ltd.

In 1972, Malcolm Williamson (former Master of the Queen’s Music) was composer in residence, organising workshops and supervising performances of his opera, Dunstan and the Devil. In the same year, the Festival commissioned Paul Patterson to write a Wind Quintet and in 1994 Francis Grier was commissioned to write a full-length choral work, Mass in Time of Persecution, embracing poems of Irina Ratushinskaya.

Light entertainment and humour have been provided by Michael Bentine, Richard Stilgoe, John Dankworth and Cleo Lane, Prunella Scales, Humphrey Lyttleton, the Swingle Singers, the Jacques Loussier Trio and the John Wilson Orchestra.

The Festival is deeply indebted to its Life Patrons and Patrons and Members of the Friends of Music in Mayfield without whose support the high artistic levels of the Festival and music in Mayfield would not be achieved.

The Friends of Music in Mayfield

From Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto at the opening of the Festival until the Organ Symphony by Saint-Saens at the close, Mayfield offers not just something for everybody, but everything for everybody. At the heart of the Festival is the Tunbridge Wells International Music Competition, which guarantees to present performances by the future stars of the classical music firmament: you will have heard them first at Mayfield.
