Orbit research is the UK’s leading independent expert in satellite communications.
Formed in 1994, the company specialises in satellite broadband products and services, satellite communication engineering, space industry major projects and education outreach. With our expertise in satellite systems, electronics design, software engineering and project management, we have the flexibility and expertise to provide reliable world-class solutions. On the basis of these established skills and in-house capabilities, Orbit Research can offer a wide range of standard and bespoke solutions.
Ian is the founder and Managing Director of Orbit Research. His background in satellite communication radio design includes the development of several new technology systems, including the first DSP-based modem – for the Inmarsat Aeronautical service.
Gavin is also a founding member of Orbit Research. As our Technical Director Gavin has lead many design and implementation projects in the satellite communication sector.
Steve Jones is a leading business development professional with an incredible flair for finding solutions that meet the aspirations of all parties involved. This has given him the capability of driving the creation of many £multi million project deals involving complex relationships of government, industrial and academic institutions.

Before setting up Orbit Research he lead the satellite communication electronics department at CSRL and was head of the business development team at Ferranti International Satellite Systems Division.
Whilst at Orbit Research Ian has developed a number of new product applications, managed a £ multi-million software development project with over 60 developers and system testers, created and assisted in the formation of a range of Space Science Education projects including the Star Centre, Space Connections, the ESA ESERO project and lead a team of space industry and academic institutions in the development of a new space science centre.
Gavin was part of the ESA project that designed the standards for the DVB-RCS satellite internet system that most internet service providers use today. So… if you’re wondering if we know what we’re talking about….. then we most certainly do!
Gavin is a graduate of Bradford University, gaining a BEng in Electrical & Electronic Engineering, Postgraduate Diploma in Business Studies and PhD in Information Systems Engineering. He completed his PhD in 1987.
In January 1994 Gavin became one of the founder members of Orbit Research Ltd, taking the position of Technical Director. He has been directly responsible for all of the development work carried out at Orbit Research Ltd and has undertaken a significant, hands-on role in all aspects of all projects.
Among the many projects and product developments Gavin has completed, are included: ND Satcom, Germany – One year contract designing and developing DVB-RCS two way Satellite Broadband Multimedia system; Anite Government Systems – technical project manager satellite systems; EMP Trexcom – debug major multiple networked tracking antenna system running over TCP/IP; Telenor, Norway – developed remote control and monitoring system to control a network of up to 40 satellite earth stations via TCP/IP; Eutelsat, France – developed remote control interface for remotely mounted earth station system. Gavin has also developed the range of company products inclusing our EAFC product and Carrier Monitoring System.

We operate our satellite earth station systems from the SMS Teleport facility, Rugby, UK. The earth station provides the most comprehensive range of secure services enabling us to meet the most demanding needs of our wide range of customers.
15 large antennas on site (8m class) give us plenty of options to provide services around the world, although our primary service operates via T11N Europe beam.
