In 1463 the Kings Head inn was built by John and Margaret Fysher on land gifted to them by the Archbishop of York but it was on the 5th May 1647 when the King’s Head went down in infamy. It is reported that at 7am on that fateful day, King Charles I accompanied by this faithful friend Dr. Hudson arrived from Oxford, tired and weary after an all night ride in unfavorable conditions. Here he rested and met with Montreuil, a French intermediary, acting on Charles’ behalf in negotiations with the Scottish Commissioners who were lodged at the now fallen ‘Bishops Palace’. His war, however, was lost and Charles agreed to surrender to the Scottish army at Kelham.

The correctional facility finally closed it’s cell doors to prisoners in 1880 and in 1895 was taken over by W.G Gregory who opened up a lace making factory. The site remained a lace making factory until the 1950s. The only remaining buildings from its time as a prison are the Governors house, the three story brick prison chapel and two surviving blocks from an earlier incarnation of the prison. Seen from the streets though, is the imposing stone clad facade of the Reception Lodge.
