Simon is the founder of Freeman Sails and has brought the art of sailmaking back to the port of Padstow with the first sail loft in the town for nearly 100 years.
Freeman Sails was born out of an idea whilst working as a sailing instructor at Rock, noting the lack of sail makers on the north coast of Cornwall. Simon graduated from the North West School of Wooden Boat Building in the Pacific North West of America in March 2010 and set up Freeman Sails in a former sail loft in the heart of Padstow.
After several years of operation in an industrial unit on the outskirts of Padstow, the company moved to a larger loft at South Quay in the heart of Padstow's harbour community in December 2014. The new premises have been converted into a sail loft incorporating a raised floor with machine pits. We are able to combine traditional sail making methods with modern computerised CAD/plotting machines to design and manufacture all types of sails and covers.
A Padstow boy through and through. Having grown up by the sea, Simon has always had a passion for the sea, sailing and boats. This love has been foremost in bringing the art of sail making back into the historic port of Padstow. Developed from an idea whilst instructing at Rock Sailing School he has recently moved the business to a self designed sail loft in the heart of Padstow's harbour community.
Recently recruited into the family business, Keith is assisting Freeman Sails with his many years experience in the aeronautical industry.
Tamsin joined the team at Freeman Sails in August 2014 after completing a Fashion degree at Plymouth College of Art. Her main role in the team is as a seamstress but she often helps out with layout work. In her spare time she designs and manufactures bespoke clothing and loves working on a sewing machine.
Ceri joined the team at Freeman Sails in April 2014 when the business was quickly expanding. Her main job in the team is layout work but is hoping to expand her skills and start working on the sewing machines in the future.
