rely on a vacuum or heavy molecular gases to insulate. Now recognised and classed as a “Super Insulation” the material has the highest insulation value of any known material with the lowest thermal conductivity value of any solid (0.014W/mK) and is now available for use in building construction and energy efficiency retrofits. Most heat transmission through walls is passed directly through the building envelope, be it masonry, block or stud frame to the internal facia such as drywall. This process is known as “thermal bridging”.
Thermablok Aerogel works by breaking this thermal bridging link whilst being totally breathable, ensuring a healthy, durable working building with a natural ability to repel liquid (hydrophobicity) whilst allowing the passage and release of moisture vapour.
Thermablok Aerogel, being hydrophobic is not affected by moisture or age, and provides major energy savings for the life of the building. A single 10mm thickness of

Thermablok Aerogel
Known as aerogel (also referred to as “frozen smoke”) this amazing substance has previously been difficult to adapt to most uses because of its fragility. Thermablok Aerogel material however overcomes this by using a unique fiber to suspend a proprietary formula of aerogel so that it can be bent or compressed while still retaining its amazing insulation properties.
The use of space age aerogel composite technology, used in the Space Shuttle, astronauts suits and NASA Mars exploration, has produced a material that not only has the lowest thermal conductivity rating of any thermal insulation product (0.015W/mK or 0.0078 Btu/ft-hr-F), but also has exceptional acoustical properties when installed in conjunction with materials from the sister company Acoustiblok UK Ltd*.
In the infrared photo shown, the ground floor has conventional insulation only, but the upper floor’s wall includes Thermablok Aerogel insulation. The mechanical connection from drywall to studs to exterior walls is a thermal short circuit (thermal bridging) that conducts heat through walls, past the conventional cavity insulation between the studs. Thermablok Aerogel breaks the heat transfer link from drywall to studs and framing members for a dramatic increase in net R-Value / decrease in U-value.
Improved energy efficiency achieved with Thermablok Aerogel will provide continuing energy cost and environmental savings. As an example, adding Thermablok Aerogel to a 240m² residential home with 400mm o/c stud framing, R13 cavity insulation, and wood siding should result in a £500.00 annual energy cost savings and eliminate 3.9 tons of CO2 emissions.
*Acoustiblok UK Ltd (Sister Company) – A single layer of Acoustiblok Sound Isolation Membrane on each side of a metal stud / gypsum board wall yields an STC of 57 (the virtual equivalent of 600mm of poured concrete, STC 58). Adding a strip of Thermablok Aerogel on each side of the stud signifigantly reduces the remaining sound transmission or flanking path. ie. the mechanical link the stud creates through the wall.)

Insulating internal walls has often meant losing space. However, a product made from “aerogel” – developed by Nasa for its Mars landing craft – is thermally efficient and light. Kate Calvert used aerogel in her 1860 house in Archway, north London.
