Nerissa is an active member of the British Obesity and Metabolic Surgery Society (BOMSS) developing bariatric dietary resources for people before and after bariatric surgery. She also provides bariatric surgery education and training to dietitians locally and nationally. She is also a member of the British Dietetic Association (BDA), National Obesity Forum (NOF) and an affiliate member of the Association for Upper Gastrointestinal Surgeons (AUGIS). She also chairs the Yorkshire and Humber bariatric dietitians group.

Food is often used as a way of managing uncomfortable emotions, whether that is, for example: anxiety, low mood, stress, relationship difficulties, self sabotage, dealing with guilt, shame or past traumas. Food can help induce feelings of calmness and is often used as a method of self soothing.
