ABOUT DDS ADVISORY LIMITED

Our strength lies in our growing network of members, volunteers and supporters who come from throughout Cumbria and further afield. We can save our red squirrels, but we need everyone to do what they can to help – financially and practically.

Individuals, families and businesses are all welcome to join as members and we appreciate those who can spare some time to become more involved with our work: having a trap in their garden; helping to run the Society; and trapping, shooting and recording. All this helps, as well as do those who support us with their membership subscriptions and donations. We value excellent support from large landowners – their contributions are crucial. Local business sponsorship is also vital and much appreciated. Importantly, we also receive practical and financial help from conservation organisations such as the Lake District National Park Authority, National Trust and Red Squirrels Northern England; this partnership-working is an essential piece of the conservation jigsaw.

Volunteers do all our administration, keeping costs to a minimum. We have no paid staff or premises. Some of our spending goes on essential public liability insurance and on promotional and educational material. But we spend the bulk of our income on grey squirrel control, without which our red squirrels would not survive. We are always on the lookout for grant funding to accelerate our work, although this can be difficult to obtain and is usually short-term. Red squirrels bring economic benefits to the local economy, in particular to the tourism sector. As these benefits are recognised, we aim to increase local business sponsorship. With falling grey squirrel numbers, and more local community involvement, our funding requirements should reach a level which is sustainable over the longer term.

As a responsible conservation organisation we record our control work and red squirrel sightings. We submit our records to a database managed by the Red Squirrels Northern England (RSNE) project. We also participate in RSNE’s annual squirrel monitoring programme, which provides an essential scientific basis for red squirrel conservation.

We work closely with landowners and with the Red Squirrels Northern England (RSNE) project. We also co-operate with other red squirrel groups and with conservation organisations such as the National Trust, Cumbria Wildlife Trust, the Forestry Commission, the Lake District National Park Authority, the Woodland Trust and the Red Squirrel Survival Trust. We are a member of Northern Red Squirrels, the umbrella body for all volunteer groups across Cumbria, the Yorkshire Dales and Northumberland.

RSNE is a partnership project working to conserve red squirrels in Northern England. Launched by HRH The Prince of Wales in 2011, the project combines and builds on the efforts of previous and current initiatives to protect red squirrels through targeted and strategic action. RSNE is steered by four main partners: the Forestry Commission, the Red Squirrel Survival Trust (RSST), the Wildlife Trusts and Natural England.

Northern Red Squirrels is an umbrella group that unites all the independent voluntary red squirrel groups and individuals working to help save our red squirrels from extinction in the North of England. It is a ‘network of voluntary action’ that shares news, ideas and best practice. The NRS website lists the other voluntary red squirrel groups covering the North of England.

We provide speakers to local groups and public meetings to raise awareness about the plight of red squirrels and to explain how we are working towards their conservation.

This project, in the Longsleddale, Kentmere and Troutbeck valleys and the area across to Coniston, received £15,000 of grant support between 2013 and 2014 from the Lake District National Park Authority and £4,000 from Red Squirrels Northern England. The project is now complete but our work in the area continues with help from Red Squirrels Northern England and a range of volunteer-led activity including red squirrel monitoring, grey squirrel control, fund-raising and increasing awareness in the local communities.

This project covers the southern part of our area, including Arnside and Silverdale. A First TransPennine Express/Forestry Commission Green Grant has paid for traps and cameras. We were also awarded a grant from the Red Squirrel Survival Trust’s Grey Control Fund for volunteer expenses, which we have supplemented to cover contractor payments. Our aim is to increase grey control over the whole area while also developing a shared strategy for red squirrel protection with large landowners and conservation organisations.

Would you like to play a vital role in an ambitious scheme to revive traditional skills and restore the unique wooded landscape of a wonderful part of South Lakeland? Following a successful, community-led bid to the Heritage Lottery Fund, the Lake District National Park Authority, on behalf of the Rusland Valley & Fells Landscape Partnership, is now looking to recruit six apprentices to help deliver the Rusland Horizons Scheme. If that’s you, or you know someone that might fit the bill,

As a group we feel it is very important to conserve our red squirrels where they still exist in South Lakeland, rather than letting them die out through neglect and then having to consider re-introducing them at some later date. This is what has happened to so many of our wildlife species, including red squirrels for large parts of the UK. The extra benefit from making the effort to conserve red squirrels here in South Lakeland is that it will give so many people, tourists included, a chance to see and enjoy these delightful creatures – they won’t be hidden away in a remote and inaccessible forest.
