A family run business nestled in the lower slopes of the Mendip Hills, Montgomery & Sons has always been loyal to the tradition and craftsmanship of joinery.
Terry has passed on his skills and advice to Mark and Stephen, and now the three run the company jointly.
The Montgomerys know the importance of new technologies, working alongside innovative architects, developers, builders and home owners. Working with glaziers, wood technologists such as Accsys Technologies, the British company behind
, and paint supply companies, creating a very forward thinking company with a nod to the traditional skills of bespoke joinery.
Montgomery & Sons Joinery Limited grew out of the need to supply superior quality traditional joinery in Somerset. Our previous family business specialised in renovating listed buildings and we expected excellent quality joinery in every project. We had a small workshop and did a small amount of joinery when we needed to, as well as the many renovation projects we undertook. During this country’s financial difficulties, the building trade took the brunt of the crunch and at the same time the joinery sector was undergoing some big changes including new health and safety regulations and gearing up for the new European regulations. Many joinery shops were faced with massive bills to upgrade machinery and install expensive software to ensure that they could offer the certificates each door and window required to comply with the CE marking as well as prove they can calculate the U-value for each item. Because of this, a number of traditional Joinery shops disappeared between 2009 and 2011 and we could no longer get the joinery we required or the quality expected. So we decided to take a sideways step in the industry and fill the gap. We already had an excellent grasp of the local building trade, and we were fully aware of what was missing. We already had good relationships with many local contractors, builders and architects.
“My father, Terry Montgomery is a qualified, highly skilled cabinet maker. I have heard some call him a genius and his name alone is enough to build a reputable business on. As my brother, Steve, and myself joined him in his business, he passed on his knowledge and skills in hand joinery from the offset. I would often complain that other carpenters would use power tools whilst all I had were hand tools. His response would be, learn it the hard way first then decide if you want to make shortcuts. That was sound, invaluable advice that both Steve and I are thankful for as these skills stand us apart from our competitors. These skills allow us to supply more than just standard joinery, but also intricate bespoke items. It is bespoke to the true sense of the word, meaning a purpose made one-off item never to be repeated”. Mark Montgomery – Director
