I am a consultant psychiatrist and honorary senior lecturer at University College London. I started Smart Start Minds specifically to help students of all ages develop the most important thinking skill for future success - the ability to concentrate. The reason is simple: concentration is essential for all learning and doing, and the better you can concentre the better you do. Concentration alone is responsible for around 62% of academic results at school and up to 32% of lifetime earnings.

During my 20 years as a doctor in the NHS, I realised that concentration problems are very common and cause much serious health and social problems. Many health problems, in turn, impair concentration. Only a small percentage of people affected are identified and receive help because they have obvious problems like ADHD. The vast majority of people who could benefit from having their concentration evaluated and improved through training never get the opportunity. During my Ph.D. in brain functioning at University College London, I came across a technique that can permanently improve concentration. I used that to develop a concentration maximiser programme for a family member in South Africa in 2004. It has since helped more than 20,000 children in 5 countries. The success of the program helped me to win a £20,000 grant in 2012 to study it further in the NHS and I have developed other successful brain health promotion programmes with more than £500,000 in research grants. This gave me the confidence to start the company in 2013 and I left the NHS in 2016 to devote my time to growing it.
