I am a British Association for Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapies (BABCP) accredited Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapist, an EMDR Association Europe accredited practitioner, a graduate member of the British Psychological Society and a Senior Associate Member of the Royal Society of Medicine. I have been in private practice since 2010 and I founded Northwest Psychotherapies Limited in December 2012. I hold a first class honours degree in Counselling and Psychology (a British Psychological Society Accredited Pathway) from the University of Bolton, a post-graduate diploma in cognitive behavioural therapy and I was trained in EMDR by Dr. Derek Farrell, former president of the EMDR Association.
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is a talking therapy which can help people who are experiencing a wide range of mental health difficulties. It works on the principle that how people think can affect how they feel and subsequently how they behave. This forms the basis of CBT.
During times of mental distress, people think differently about themselves and what happens to them. Thoughts can become extreme and unhelpful and this can worsen how a person feels. They may then behave in a way that prolongs their distress.
CBT practitioners help individuals identify and change their extreme thinking and unhelpful behaviour. In doing this, the result is often a major improvement in how a person feels and lives.
Cognitive and behavioural psychotherapies are a range of therapies based on concepts and principles derived from psychological models of human emotion and behaviour. They include a wide range of treatment approaches for emotional disorders, along a continuum from structured individual psychotherapy to self-help material.
EMDR is a powerful psychological therapy that was developed by Francine Shapiro, an American Clinical Psychologist, in the 1980s. As a senior research fellow at the Mental Research Institute in Palo Alto, USA, she published the first research data confirming the efficacy of EMDR in 1989.
EMDR is a powerful therapy and training in it is reserved to mental health professionals. You are strongly recommended to consult only legitimate clinicians who have undertaken and accredited recognised by the EMDR Europe and EMDR UK & Ireland associations. Your therapist should be happy to show you their certificate of training so you can check their provider.
