This depends on the campaign or research we are running, but it’s usually one of four ways:

The telephone preference service is designed to prevent unsolicited sales or marketing calls. These calls are either trying to sell you something, attempting to provoke an action from you or trying to collect information that will form the basis of a piece of direct marketing such as a mailshot, telemarketing or email campaign.

Our call would either have been part of a research study or because our client has permission to contact you (e.g. you might be a customer and they gathered your consent). It’s important to note that research calls are not covered by TPS. Researchers need to reach a representative group of people and it’s important not to exclude anyone. Some surveys define how services are procured and if we didn’t contact TPS registered individuals, it could impact services and policies.
