Really? It still represents your hard earned money and what you have achieved in your life. Even if you have an estate than is less than the IHT threshold (£325,000) and you wish to leave your estate to a certain person or people, if you make a paper will stating that you make an outright gift or legacy of this amount, then if your will does not contain a general trust for sale (as a professional drafted will would), then your intended beneficiaries may not be in as safe a position from creditors. You will also lose out from the protection and peace of mind of having people you trust administering your Estate, and thereby being able to adapt to changing circumstances, holding back inheritance from say, a child on the verge of divorce, or bankruptcy. A Will provides a greater degree of control but can also provide for changing circumstances in a way that will give you greater peace of mind.

I graduated from London School of Economics – one of the original London universities in the Russell Group and thus often termed as a ‘Redbrick’ university in 2009 with a 2.1 in Law, after which I undertook a Masters in Research in Law at Queen Mary in Family Law and Jurisprudence. I started teaching and lecturing in law during my Masters and continued this for 5 years. I still guest lecture at Kings College London and lecture in Law and Business at various London universities.
I have always had a passion for the way law touches people in their every day lives. Even more fascinating is how the law sometimes lags behind societal need, and how it often doesn’t conform to peoples’ expectations – like the ‘common law wife’ myth – the myth that law will automatically, on termination of a relationship, provide for a woman who has been living with, caring and homemaking for, a partner and children for many years, without her being married to her partner. About 70% of the population believe this – but it’s a fallacy.
One day, I was discussing with my father-in-law, who is a Certified Financial Planner with twenty years’ experience, about the rights of unmarried cohabitants where it comes to tax planning and we started talking about the importance of wills. Intestacy law, the area of law governing where our money and resources will pass on death if we don’t have a will, as I soon found out, was another classic example of law lagging behind societal change, and making choices for us, and not necessarily ones that we would want. Thus began a new passion – for Succession Law.
I qualified with the Institute of Professional Willwriters, enrolled as a STEP student member and founded Redbrick Wills and Estate Planning. I chose the name ‘Redbrick’ because it has a connotation within academia of representing excellence and that is the level of service and quality we aim to provide.
