A lot of the recent problems in business could have been avoided if someone had stepped outside their specialist areas and asked a few basic common sense questions. What you bring to the business may be a particular talent or expertise, but your really special talent, the real reason you are there, is as much the talent of asking intelligent questions as providing intelligent answers.
That’s the passion that drives IQIA. It’s about making business work better. That might be right down at the detailed level – rolling up our sleeves and fixing things one small step at a time, or it might be right back at the strategic overview. Why, exactly, are you doing that?/operating in that market?/trying to win that contract?/not talking to your people?/allowing yourself to get distracted?
Most business, at its root, is simply a group of people, taking some resources, combining them in some way, and providing them to people who want them for money. So if it isn’t working, the list of causes is usually quite short – the wrong resources, the wrong workforce (or the right workforce, working wrongly), bad communications internally, bad communications externally, inefficient processes, or an output nobody wants (or wants enough to pay for it).
In those situations, I am the person who will ask the awkward questions that everybody else is too close, too scared, or too demotivated to ask. And I start by believing that this doesn’t have to be confrontational. Most people want to do a good job, so if someone comes in who wants to help them, who respects them, and who they can respect, they will listen. An open mind and a sense of humour are always a good start.
Look around the site. I have listed some cases where I have been able to challenge accepted wisdom, and along the way, made some money and helped people get more out of the jobs they do. You will see that the people I have worked with are in all areas of the business and at all levels.
