Island Mechanical Services (IMS)
Combining over 50 years experience IMS was formed in 2012 by Russell Thomson and Mike Turner following the amalgamation of Island Oil Services, Island Pool Services, Gennic Mechanical and Biomass1st.
Biomass 1st, established 2010, brings a wealth of experience in the domestic biomass heating market. Biomass 1st are proud to be sole agents for MCZ biomass products. Aimed at the Island's 'off grid' heating market, MCZ have the most comprehensive range of compact biomass heating products available. The majority of the water heating products have MCS accreditation and qualify for the RHI initiative. MCZ are Europe's premier biomass heating product supplier, and to that end have produced a range of UK specific products that allow for a smooth transition from kerosene or LPG to biomass.
A dense, high energy fuel in a convenient form, wood pellet is ideally suited toall types of buildings. Possibly the most convienient biomass fuel, pellets enable advanced automation in a compact appliance. Pellets are a readily available fuel with a good network of manufacturers and suppliers across the UK. There is an EN Standard for wood pellets that guarantees a consistent, high quality product. The high energy content of this fuel means storage volumes are smaller than chip or log.
Wood chips are another maufactured product although the process is simpler than that for pellet. Quality and energy content can be variable depending on the wood type and moisture content. This fuel is suitable for larger installations and is unlikely to be chosen for standard domestic installations. Regular quality, size and low moisture content are essential so a managed supply from a professional producer is key to trouble free operation. Storage volumes are much higher than pellet so hoppers or silos will be bigger and consideration of access for regular deliveries must be taken into account at planning stage.
We describe log systems as a lifestyle choice. The boilers need to be fed daily and managing fuel supply is primary to a successful installation. Logs will need to be well seasoned and we recomend keeping two years supply in the drying sheds to ensure consistency in moisture content. Again storage volumes are higher than pellet but the fuel is not a manufactured product, it is literally chunks of tree. Most log boilers require logs that are 0.5m long with a moisture content below 25%.
