ABOUT SURTEES STUDIOS LIMITED

The Primary School is in the heart of the village. We currently educate 78 Pupils aged 4-11 and there is an independent pre-school based onsite. We are a family orientated, caring school providing an excellent and enjoyable education which enables all children to achieve their full potential.

We are a family oriented, caring school providing an excellent and enjoyable education which enables all children to achieve their full potential.

At Stratford St Mary every individual is valued for who they are and what they contribute to our school. We are very proud of our role in the community, the way children are nurtured and the close partnership we have with each family.

“The warm and caring atmosphere ensures that pupils feel very safe. Older pupils look after younger pupils, for example, through organising play activities at break and lunchtimes. They also provide leadership through the school council and eco council and as junior road safety officers. Pupils enjoy coming to school and this is reflected in their high levels of attendance.”

Our children take a great interest in the well-being of others. It is quite common for the children to ask to help those who are less fortunate than themselves. We will support a number of charities and fundraising events each year, usually chosen by the School Council.

Children across the school elect class members to represent them on the School Council. They meet regularly and discuss issues, developing a good sense of civic process and business practice. These children are the ‘voice’ of the school as a whole and take their role very seriously.

We are very fortunate to have ample scope within our grounds for scientific explorations and where possible, children are taught science in a ‘hands on’ way.

As a school we are dedicated to helping our children enjoy an active life and this includes participation in a wide range of sports and games.

Children’s progress and learning is continually monitored throughout their time with us to ensure they are making the best possible progress. This enables us to quickly identify if children have particular needs.

The coaches provide a range of activities which engage the children’s mind and prepare them for the day ahead. In addition to this, the ‘Start Active’ club teaches a range of valuable skills which include: co-ordination, balance, agility and flexibility, communication skills, problem solving skills and tactics. The children are also provided with a snack of juice and toast. Bookings can be made in advance or paid for on the day.

for lots more information about admissions, for access to the online application service or to download a Common Application form.

The school’s planned admission number (PAN) is 15.

From time to time some children require additional support for a set period of time to help meet their needs or improve their learning. The decision to do this is made by the school and is based on a variety of factors including academic progress, and/or assessments carried out by teaching staff or other professionals. It may also be based on ensuring children have a smooth transition into school or require support when going through significant change either at home or school. Parents/carers will be informed when this happens.

How does Stratford St Mary Primary School know if children need extra help?

a pupil asks for help

If you have concerns then contact your child’s teacher or Mrs Bilner (SENCO). Mrs Bilner is available most mornings and after school in the playground, on the phone or please feel free to arrange an appointment at a time which is suitable for you, our office staff will help arrange this.

We obtain parental permission before referring a pupil to an outside agency for support with their learning etc. Referral forms are then completed in conjunction with parents/carers and forwarded to the most appropriate agency. After a series of assessments, a programme of support is usually provided to the school and parents/carers.

How will I know how my child is doing?

How will you help me to support my child’s learning?

Activities and school trips are available to all. Risk assessments are carried out and procedures are put in place to enable all children to participate. However, if it is deemed that an intensive level of 1:1 support is required a parent or carer may be asked to accompany their child during the activity.

As a school we are happy to discuss individual access requirements. Our school is wheelchair accessible, there is a wheelchair accessible toilet and all doors are wide enough for wheelchair users and require no ramps. Pupils’ specific learning needs are supported through the use of technology (computers, writing slopes, chair supports) where appropriate. There are disabled parking spaces.

The SEN budget is allocated each financial year. The money is used to provide additional support or resources dependent on an individual’s needs. The additional provision may be allocated after discussion with the class teacher at pupil progress meetings or if a concern has been raised by them at another time during the year. If any concerns are raised on completion of the assessments Mrs Bilner will investigate further support or advice from outside agencies if required with permission from parents.

It is the policy to ensure that the needs of each individual child and family are met. Learning is supported by a broad and balanced curriculum which is carefully planned to help the children develop into confident and successful individuals. The team of dedicated and highly trained staff can fully support children who have special educational needs and/or disabilities and those for whom English is an additional language.

School governors provide strategic leadership and accountability in the school. The Board of Governors appoint the Headteacher and hold the main responsibility for the school’s finance. The governors work with the Headteacher to make the tough decisions about balancing resources and are a source of challenge and support to the Headteacher . The governing body sets the aims and objectives for the school and monitors and evaluates the progress the school is making towards achievement of these.
