My name is Alan Gascoigne and I am the Owner and Managing Director of Astrop Consultants.
I have over 25 years experience working in senior financial positions in a number of medium-sized businesses, in a variety of industries including electronics, aerospace, automotive and paper.
For the last 15 years I have served as Finance Director of a number of SME businesses, operating as part of a cross functional management team at Board level and have a proven track record of driving change and improvement within those businesses.
I am commercially driven with a particular emphasis on ensuring that the strategic challenges of the business interface with the financial management, and that the commercial, operational and financial functions of the business work together to improve the overall business performance.
I am now looking to use my experience to help smaller businesses who are growing and developing to ensure that the fundamentals of financial strategy, business planning, cash flow forecasting, financial management and good commercial practice are applied within the business to enable growth to be successful, profitable and for the long term.
When a business is growing, one of the essential requirements is to keep good control of it’s finances. The challenge is that when a company is in the early or mid stages of growth, it generally does not require, and cannot afford, a full time Finance Director.
This means that the owner or Managing Director is left to handle all things to do with the financial side of the business instead of growing, marketing and developing the company.
More and more companies are realising that using a part-time Finance Director in their business can provide a solution to these issues. Using the services of a finance professional for a few days each month to handle the financial management of the business enables the other Directors to focus their attention on the commercial and operational issues.
In addition, having someone on board who has worked in different, and usually larger, businesses means that they can bring a different insight to business issues, and can also be a useful sounding board for advice and guidance, or sometimes just to bounce new ideas off.
