We also run traditional craft and applied arts courses, taught by practising craftspeople and artists. Plas Tirion is set within the Snowdonia National Park, in the beautiful Conwy Valley, approx 2 miles from Betws-y-coed. We are close to mountains, rivers and lakes and fifteen miles from the sea, there is a wide choice of fantastic accommodation to suit all budgets, from boutique hotels to shepherds huts – just let us know if you need help finding a place to stay and we can suggest some great places.
We manage an eighty acre forest of mainly conifers in the Conwy Valley. We mill this into untreated rough-sawn timber of varying sizes for timber framing, planks and cladding, and during the winter months we sell well-seasoned logs. We sell our timber at £14/cubic foot (eg a 12ft 1″ x 12″ plank would cost £14). Please call us for a stock list or to discuss your requirements.
This side of our business is increasingly in demand; for guidance on choosing and specifying the most appropriate materials for your particular situation or for help with diagnosing the causes of failing building fabric, site visits can be a great investment. An hour or two of our time and experience can often translate into a genuine saving of both labour and money.
We are centrally placed in North Wales and charge £45/hour + mileage of 45p/mile.
We are stockists of the award winning range of ecological and sustainable building materials manufactured and sourced by Ty Mawr. They are highly appropriate for the repair of traditional buildings and for use in new build, as a sustainable alternative to conventional materials. We hold stock of a range of building limes, boards and insulation, with breathable paints and other ancillary products to order.
We are open for sales and collections Monday to Friday between 8.00 and 5.00 and on Saturday mornings by appointment – and its always a good idea to ring first and check stock before you visit. We can also arrange delivery to anywhere in the UK, just ring or email us for a quote.
We have been using lime in North Wales for eighteen years now, so we know our stuff! We came into the business through our interest in vernacular architecture, a concern for the environment and through working on our own restoration projects – we love old buildings and want to make the very best choices when it comes to their repair and conservation. If you call us you will get friendly support and advice, and you can look at the materials in situ, in our ongoing restoration of Plas Tirion manor house and outlying buildings or learn about our experience through our updates.
NBC was founded by Ned and Sophie Scharer. Tom and James started as apprentice lime plasterers and with Hefin Hughes acting as project manager make up our lime-works team. Martin joined us this year to run the office and Plas Tirion site and Trebor has a workshop on site providing traditional carpentry and joinery. We have been helped enormously by other family members as the business has continued to grow.
