Few families can boast such a long and colourful history as Tiffin. Records show that Tiffin was established in 1695 after a member of the Tiffin family invented a compound to eliminate bed bugs which was so successful that a thriving business soon developed.
The company enjoyed royal patronage over the centuries holding the impressive titles of Insect Destroyer to Their Majesties George II, III, IV and to Queen Victoria, hence the reference in the illustrated Thomas Rowlandson print of “T. Tiffin, Bugg Destroyer to His Majesty.” At the bottom of this print are the words “with acknowledgement to Britain’s oldest pest control company.”
The company has remained a ‘family’ firm for over 320 years, and to this day there has always been a Tiffin at the helm.
Before doing anything else change to energy saving bulbs and install an energy monitor. If possible, put the monitor in the entrance hall so you’ll see it as you enter and leave, making you more aware of your everyday energy usage. This has the quickest pay back to investment.
Make a point of taking a look at your home’s exterior occasionally. Defective gutters and downpipes can cause dry and wet rot, both of which are very expensive to repair. Wet walls also lead to cooler internal surfaces and higher bills. We provide a unique service using thermal imaging to help identify defects.
Draughts can be eliminated completely with good quality products. There are many ways to do this without incurring great expense. Again thermal imaging assists a great deal in this area.
As a Quantity Surveyor, project manager and businessman Robert has overseen everything from major commercial projects to residential damp proofing. More recently he has concentrated on energy efficiency within the existing housing stock. The best thing about Robert is his encyclopaedic knowledge of buildings and what goes wrong with them. He can often spot a problem as soon as he arrives.
Bringing his expertise to the family business of damp and dry rot preservation, Robert then grew the business further whilst establishing Tiffin’s reputation as a general building company offering their clients a broad range of services.
Robert is well known for his passion, the Eco Tiffin side of the business, making what he calls, ‘the Living Environment’ better, through the implementation of sound ecological principles applied to housing through continual and further education. He has always taken a great interest in “green issues” and stays abreast developments, often testing new and innovative products.
Over recent years Robert has qualified as a certified thermographer, which uses thermal imaging to help identify building defects to discover where heat and energy loss is occurring. Robert has also studied at CORE to obtain a diploma in retrofitting; this is the application of techniques in saving energy to older buildings (pre 1960 and listed buildings). He is now a Retrofit Coordinator with the Retrofit Academy and on the London Board of the FMB (Federtion of Master Builders). This specialist knowledge, down to earth and practical approach, enables him to advise his clients on the most cost effective ways to find the solutions, using modern materials and techniques, whilst maintaining traditional building skills.
