This book records the history of veterinary practice in Newmarket over the past 180 years. It investigates (and refutes) the claim that veterinary surgeons could not make a living in Newmarket in 1831. It charts the history and progress of veterinary practice in Newmarket from those early days to modern times where three veterinary hospitals provide the highest quality care for horses.
In 1962, Ian was appointed by the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine to accompany an expedition organised by the British Museum (Natural History) to Northern Rhodesia (Zambia). The museum staff would be collecting skins and other specimens from a wide range of wild mammals. His job was to carry out post-mortem examinations on the animals and look for zoonoses (diseases of animals communicable to humans) and also diseases transmissible to domestic animals. After a few weeks he was appointed leader of the expedition.
