Established in 2005, Allen Archaeology Ltd is an independent, professional commercial archaeological contractor and consultancy with offices in Lincoln, Birmingham, Cambridge and Southampton
Allen Archaeology Ltd started life as a one man enterprise operating from Director Mark Allen’s spare room. Mark was joined a year later by Director Chris Clay, moving to offices in Branston and the company gradually took on more business, becoming a limited company in 2009. In 2015, we marked our tenth anniversary with the move of our Head Office to substantially larger, new premises in Lincoln.
The value of the company has risen steadily and, according to a Plimsoll Talat financial report (independent industry review) in 2016 Allen Archaeology was the highest ranked archaeological company in the East Midlands.
We provide a full range of archaeological services on a national basis. From initial consultation to the fulfilling of archaeological planning conditions, we aim to provide a cost effective, risk-free and time efficient service. Whether you are looking for a geophysical survey in advance of a planning application, the recording of a building prior to alteration or demolition, full scale excavation as part of an archaeological mitigation condition or help and guidance for a community project, we can help.
Our experienced team can provide archaeological advice at an early stage in the design programme. This can include negotiation with the planning authority on your behalf, desk-based research into a site’s archaeological potential, and fieldwork specifically targeted to ensure the swift resolution of any potential planning issues. We understand the importance of ensuring projects meet the deadlines set by the planning authority or our clients and can provide archaeological mitigation strategies tailored to the specific needs of each development, from the single house extension to large-scale infrastructure projects.
Allen Archaeology Ltd is a Registered Organisation with the Chartered Institute for Archaeologists and works to ensure that the archaeological work is conducted in a safe and professional manner and with a high standard of archaeological work.
In 2012, Allen Archaeology Ltd was commissioned to undertake archaeological investigations at 200–201 High Street in Lincoln before the construction of a new three storey retail development. Before any building work took place, the excavation in the west of the site was embarked upon by a team of archaeologists.
As part of our wider training and outreach activities, we host a number of volunteers each year on both long- and short-term placements within our field and archive teams. Recent and current volunteers include graduates, prospective students and those still in secondary education. We provide structured placements for secondary school work experience students each academic year, through the Education Business Partnership.
We are fully insured and have a dedicated risk assessment for volunteers and trainees which follows the advice of the HSE on working with young people.
Whether you are looking to commission a geophysical survey, trial trenching, open area excavation, environmental impact assessment, desk-based research, systematic field survey, earthwork survey or need someone to undertake a watching brief, strip map and record, or building survey, we’re here to help. Our field team are supported by in-house experts in finds, human remains and lithics analysis, survey, photography and illustration and by a dedicated finds and archives team.
We take our community responsibilities seriously and regularly work with the National Trust and with local archaeology and history groups. As part of our training and outreach activities we provide structured placements for secondary school work experience students through the Education Business Partnership.
