The real wizardry in business…

Sound business experience comes from having achieved results yourself. I’m proud to admit that I’ve had some awesome achievements. But I’ve also made massive mistakes. It’s through those mistakes that I’ve gained my most invaluable insights.

David joined the aa Accountants team in 2016, working two days a week, and is proving himself a huge success with team members and clients. His business credentials are in good order, since both his father and grandfather ran their own businesses and so from an early age David not only had a strong work and business ethic impressed on him but was also involved in the business decision –making process.
A Bristolian (and proud of it), after leaving school David joined an accountancy practice as a trainee accountant and, after qualifying, worked in industry and commerce including a spell as the Financial Director of a 24 company construction business, enabling to move from a compliance-based to a strategic role. He’s worked in private practice for a Top 10 firm and in various Top 50 firms, and in 2001 took control of his own accountancy practice.
Brought up and educated in Bourne in Lincolnshire, Benedict always wanted to do something related to business, right back to his GCSE in Business Studies. However, after successfully taking A-levels in Sciences and Maths, he studied microbiology at the University of Leeds, emerging in 2013 with a first class Honours degree. He enjoyed the discipline and analytical approach to scientific study, which he now brings to his work at aa Accountants.
Having decided against furthering his career in science, Benedict returned to his interest in business activities and, after trying one or two different avenues, came to the conclusion that accountancy would give him the right mix of numbers and business involvement. He took the step of registering to study for the ACCA qualification, and funded this by working at a call centre. Although his ‘day-job’ was a far cry from professional accountancy, being in a customer-facing role has given him confidence and honed his skills in dealing with people – a useful attribute in professional practice. Benedict joined aa Accountants in 2016 on a part-time basis and was gratified to be able to start working on ‘real-life’ accounts straight away, as a useful member of our team.
Ann is responsible for helping local businesses fulfil their potential through working with Shaz and the team at aa accountants. Her warm and bubbly personality is the first point of contact for many of our new clients.
Her work involves carefully identifying and targeting the type of businesses that will benefit most from the firm’s experience. She explains: “Any firm of accountants should be able to crunch the numbers. We want to work with business owners that want a lot more than that.”
“Timely and accurate management information is the basis to improving business performance. We use this as a starting point to plan and measure growth and improve profit margins. Our clients see us as key advisers to their businesses, not just accountants. We help them transform their lives by identifying their goals and navigating them through to the outcomes they want.”
“We focus on their goals, not the numbers. That can mean buying that bigger house, putting the children through private schools or just taking more time out of the business.”
“But my greatest challenge is helping local business owners to see that accountants should do a lot more than add the numbers up. Most have grown used to a basic ‘file your accounts ‘ service. So we explore how we can help them improve their profitability, secure their wealth and act as key adviser to their team.”
Sharing of knowledge is as important as acquiring it. Helping others grow through your experiences is a powerful method of sharing.
Matthew Price chief correspondent on Radio 4 from the Today programme was keen to see the impact of the budget on businesses in Peterborough. Shaz was asked to provide his synopsis.
