“I come from a time where, as kids, we used to take our bottles back to the shop, and get a 5 pence piece (and quickly convert that into 5 penny sweets!), where we were expected to help at the village fete, clean the church with Mum and collect Mrs Jones’s newspaper for her when she was poorly. Where a vocational job was the norm, and apprenticeships were not rocket science.

Employers invested into their staff, and getting a gold clock for 40 years’ service is what people aspired to achieve. Then suddenly it all stopped. The world seemed to forget, and commerce seemed to close its eyes against basic social responsibilities. Then recession struck, again and again, and social responsibility began to reappear, with little spare cash available people started looking at ways to save money, and to donate time and skills to help.
