and I am the director of Red Earth Consultancy. I set up Red Earth in 2008 after 20 years' building a successful corporate career in the UK, US and Europe, and 7 years' training and practising as a coach, counsellor, trainer and accredited mediator.
During my corporate years I came to see that conflict, stress, poor communication and strained working relationships are inevitable factors in the workplace - particularly when there are changes and challenges afoot, and ambitious, talented people in the mix. Unfortunately, the ability to acknowledge these important issues - and the skills to address them head on, and resolve them quickly and effectively - are often missing in even the most successful businesses, however inspirational in other ways the leadership may be.
It is no wonder that only 30% of organisational change management programs are rated a success by the leadership teams responsible for implementing them (McKinsey Global Surveys 2008, 2010, 2012). The reasons they consistently cite for their change program's failure is the inability of the leaders of the business to communicate with their people effectively about the change, gain their employees' buy-in, and then maintain employee engagement with the process as it unfolds. Red Earth is evangelical about changing this basic - and costly - business management inefficiency.
. Key to my work, and to Red Earth's ethos, is that I am an Accredited (SPCP) Mediator, an Affiliate Member of the CIPD, and a qualified (though no longer practising) relationship counsellor. I abide by the BACP's ethical framework in all of my work. I am comfortable, and practised, in working at any level of an organisation, and with a wide variety of people; and importantly, with both the high emotion that accompanies many workplace problems, and the deep-rooted issues from which those emotions might spring. This differentiates me from many of the mediators, coaches and trainers working in the field today.
