With Americas Thanksgiving on the horizon it seems prudent to mark the passing of another year of successful bonsai cultivation, by and large. Growing bonsai trees is not an exact science and things can go wrong, all we can do is take those experiences and learn from them. Here in Blighty the weather is never entirely a great help but on balance I think our little country is pretty good for pursuing our hobby. This year we had a good spring and early summer before it all went pear shaped in July and August but then the last couple of months have been kind. As I approach thirty years of non stop bonsai work I can safely say that by this time of year, every year, my plants will have done most of what I hoped. It’s good to plan the way ahead for our trees, just reacting to what happened won’t cut it. I have discovered that having a ten year plan in mind is the only way to really make great bonsai. If a tree isn’t doing what we hoped it’s easy to blame the weather or a whole host of other factors but the fact is, most problems and failures are in fact our own fault. Often a problem is several years in the making and failing to recognise the signs is the main reason things go wrong. Also doing too much, which I believe is the primary reason so many folk run into problems. We have to learn to go at a slower pace that HAS to be dictated by the trees and not what we might think, hope or mistakenly believe. Have a ten year plan, make it flexible and add another year to it, every year. There is no goal in bonsai, there is no end game and a tree will never be finished. Fall in love with the process.
I hate to say it but the big C is just over the horizon, that being Christmas of course. The ONLY time Kaizen Bonsai get to have a break. I have booked my traditional Christmas skip, there really is NO rest around here.
