During his tenure as the manager of the RSPB's Conwy reserve, Alan built up an intimate knowledge of the best birdwatching sites on Anglesey and mainland North Wales. Together with Owen Roberts, he was able to produce an authoritative guide to the region for Buckingham Press. Since leaving RSPB, Alan and his partner Ruth Miller achieved national celebrity after conducting The Biggest Twitch, a year-long world-wide record-setting bird quest.
