We’re an independent family run business with a rich history that began back in 1963 when Clive Benfell founded the company. We began selling fresh eggs directly from the farm, and as demand for this type of egg grew our business changed direction from door to door sales, and we subsequently became a wholesale supplier that resembles who we are today. In 1970 Clive Benfell purchased our current one and a half acre market garden and poultry farm site based in Hurstpierpoint. From here we expanded our offerings, and began providing fruit and vegetables to local schools throughout Sussex as part of their school dinners. In the 1980s we further expanded our premises with the completion of a new warehouse.
Following the salmonella scare that was introduced by Edwina Currie in the late 1980s, as well as the gradual demise of school dinners, we began to change direction and refocused on our selection of core products. Our focus on fruit and vegetables was replaced with brand new chilled and frozen food ranges, with the aim to make them available to a wide variety of retail outlets across Sussex, Surrey and the South East.
A Family Business Providing High Quality Food and Drink Products
Today our business continues to grow, and the recent expansion of our warehouse has allowed us to provide additional product lines to our customers. To support this growth we updated our fleet of vehicles to incorporate new larger dual temperature trucks. Even with all of this growth our emphasis is still on being a family run business who offers a friendly service and competitive prices. As the business grows so has the family, who continue to be involved in the business, with Mark Benfell and his wife Linda, as well as Mark’s sister Lindsey and her husband Richard all playing an important role in the continued success of Benfell.
