Thatch-Safe® is a layered product designed especially for thatch which has had LABC (National Building Control Approval) since 2008. It is a flexible barrier (1M X 5M) which is placed horizontally over the rafters and under the thatch.
Many thatchers, architects, surveyors, firemen, builders and thatched home owners have been involved in the development of this product so that it addresses everyones requirements.
It has insulation of 1/2 hour and so is a one product solution in meeting fire retardant and insulation requirements. With the thatch, it meets 0.2 µ value so that no additional insulation products are required to meet building regulation requirements.
The fact that it is quick and easy to fit, compared to other solutions, makes it a cost effective option in meeting fire retardant and insulation requirements. Savings are made in both the product and the labour element required to fix it to the rafters.
As we can see from the diagram, the Thatch-Safe® sits on the rafters and under the thatch. This provides a barrier between the thatch and the roof structure with no counter battening required due to the breathability of Thatch-Safe®.
Please follow the below instructions when fitting the THATCH-SAFE® product to your roof.

was to provide a one product solution for fire barrier and insulation requirements for new thatched buildings which also addressed:
Thatch-Safe® has been developed to meet the same criteria as The Dorset Model ie B4 Building Regulations. Plus it has insulation – so that with 400mm of Water Reed it meets 0.2µ value, making it a one product solution for fire protection and heat loss prevention.
The insulation (this product is 20mm thick) is sandwiched between the foil and the reinforcing wire mesh. With the thatch, 0.2µ value is easily achieved.
Helps keep out water prior to thatch being applied, but it is not water proof – because then it would not be truly micro porous.
