Making the decision that it is time for a loved one to move into a care home can give rise to mixed emotions. There is relief that those who are unable to manage at home will finally receive the support they need, tempered with concern about whether they will be happy in their new surroundings. Depending on individual circumstances, there may even be a measure of guilt that no matter how much practical, personal and emotional support was provided, independent living was no longer an option.
The recent Which? report into the future of care homes may therefore have been of concern to those whose loved ones are currently enjoying the benefits of a care home or are contemplating doing so at some stage in the future. With the care home population already being more numerous than the city of Manchester, Which? estimates that by 2022 nearly 90% of councils will see a shortfall in care home bed availability. Mitigating this shortfall will require an additional provision of some 42,000 places over the next five years, with the requirement rising to over 72,000 by 2025.
Flagging the potential problem up at this stage does give the Government and local authorities time to plan for additional care home places. The options for home care are also ever widening with private and public care support services offering an ever widening range of services to help people to live independently for longer.
