A brief history of MC Modelmaking – following a successful seven years working for architectural practices and modelmaking companies in London, Martin Earle started his business in a small garden workshop in 1994. After a year, a more permanent address was sought, and so MC Modelmaking moved to the South Stables in the Historic Dockyard. In the year 2000 the business became a limited company with three employees. By 2003 the need for more space coincided with the Dockyard Trust’s development plan for the stable area, enabling the company to move quickly within the Dockyard to the custom-fitted workshop that MC Modelmaking still occupy.
From its inception, the core work undertaken by MC Modelmaking was from the field of architecture. This area continued to develop with the application of CAD and an in-house laser engraver, as well as a growth in the residential sales sector that required models for new housing, apartment and overseas developments.
Since 2005 the company has also been working with a wide selection of designers and museums to provide display items, props, interactives and replicas for many museums and themed attractions.
Our workshop is based within the Historic Dockyard, rubbing shoulders with the world-famous HMS Cavalier, Ocelot and Gannett. Visiting clients are often keen to view the busy mix of the daily business undertaken here – a popular tourist attraction, film and TV location, artistic venue and University facility, we are located in a busy, vibrant community that provides us with access to services such as a foundry, woodcarvers, carpenters, signwriters and graphic designers.
As modelmakers, we pride ourselves in our commitment to delivering accurate, detailed models that help visualise new designs and concepts, and so inform and excite clients and their customers. With an efficient workshop and full-time modelmaking staff, we follow each project closely, liasing with architects and designers on the initial stages and pre-visualisation, providing model samples and progress photographs during production, through to model delivery and specialist installation on completion.

The recent launch of a new Audley Retirement Village in Romsey brought together MC Modelmaking and Quintessence Ltd to supply an interactive sales model to assist in the sales and marketing of this 32 acre site. Consisting of 155 cottages and apartments, the LED-illuminated sales model depicted every aspect of the site, from the Grade II listed Tudor Manor to the restored greenhouses. The interactive presentation combines a Surface Pro 4 tablet computer with a mirrored flat screen to introduce and guide the customer through the village. Site is planned to open in 2019.
We are lucky enough to be based in The Historic Dockyard, Chatham and are in the Ordnance Mews Workshops. Please use the interactive map below to get directions to us. When you reach the dockyard, ask on the gate and one of the security guards will give you directions to us.
