Saint Luke’s is an ancient building, in part, dating back to the Norman Conquest. In 1231 King Henry III, who had a special regard for the Knights Templars, granted to them the manor and soke of Rothley, including the manor of Gaddesby. The Domesday records show that in 1087 Gaddesby was small, but over the next 300 years its population increased rapidly, due to rich agricultural prosperity, and by 1377 the population of Gaddesby over the age of 14 was 176 making it one of the largest villages in Leicestershire. This historical church is well worth a visit, described by Nikolaus Pevsner in “Buildings of England”, Leicestershire and Rutland edition as “One of the largest and most beautiful village churches in Leicestershire.”
