The Stress Illness Recovery approach (SIRPA) pioneered by American physician, Dr Sarno, explores the underlying stresses that may be causing your pain or chronic symptoms. He coined the term TMS (Tension Myositis Syndrome) to describe musculo-skeletal symptoms that have a stress origin. It is also known as “Mind/Body Syndrome”. As long as severe tissue damaging causes have been ruled out, such as cancer, infection, a fracture or an auto-immune disorder, then it is possible that if you have persistent symptoms, they may be stress induced.
