Motech is a company that has specialised in the control of high performance electric motors for more than 20 years. We are able to provide motor controllers that we have designed ourselves, as well as complete assemblies incorporating controllers and motors from other manufacturers.
A major part of Motech’s business is the design and manufacture of special purpose controllers for permanent magnet brushless electric motors. These motors offer high power output for their small size and low mass, as well as being very reliable with little ongoing maintenance. These characteristics are attractive for high-end industrial applications, such as semiconductor manufacturing machines and flight simulation. Motech’s motor controllers have been supplied into these industries for many years.
Motech was founded in 1989 by two electrical engineers. During the early years, the company operated as a consultancy, providing specialist power electronic services to large organisations. In those days the company’s premises was a small shed in Kingston-upon-Thames, Surrey.
As business increased, additional engineers were recruited, and Motech was able to offer switch-mode power supplies and microprocessor-based drives to complement its original analogue product range.
Bill is one of the founders of the company with over 25 years experience in the UK drives industry. During the 1980s he was responsible for the development of a number of drives for military applications whilst employed by a major UK defence company. Bill left this employment during 1989 to start Motech. Whilst he was responsible for the company’s design and development in the early years, he now concentrates primarily on sales activities and strategic development of the company.
Ian joined Motech as Technical Director during 1996. He brought with him a wealth of experience in control systems theory and applications. This was obtained primarily in the UK defence industry whilst working on a number of major projects, including land, sea and air-based servo-systems. Coinciding with Ian’s arrival, the company began the development of more advanced digital drives. He is now responsible for the company’s design and development activities.
Steve joined the company during 1995. Prior to this he was employed as an Accountant with a large London local authority. Steve is responsible for the company’s long-term financial planning, performance monitoring and preparing forecasts as well as other financial duties.
Gerry joined Motech during 1996 and is now responsible for the smooth day-to-day running of the company. He ensures products are manufactured correctly and delivered on time.
Our product range now includes electric drives for the marine market.
