Tilly Hire was established by John Boyce in 1975, but John wasn't the first Boyce to make his name in the transport business. Until his retirement in 1987, John's father, Ron Boyce was Managing Director of the Family Transport Business, established in 1932 by Frank Burman (John's grandfather). The Family Transport Business began life as an 'ash & coke' moving company but later diversified into haulage & plant hire.
When Tilly Hire was set up, its small fleet consisted of a number of self-drive 3.5 tonne GVW tippers. In contrast, the Family Transport Business was notable for its impressive 16 & 24 tonne tippers. 'Tilly Mint' is a Scouse term of endearment for a little girl, which is precisely what a 3.5 tonne GVW tipper looks like when it's parked up next to its 24 tonne equivalent.
As a business, we've followed the example of Frank Burman, Ron Boyce and the Family Transport Business, in that we've never stood still. That's the wonderful thing about customers: they always want something new or different, and they can always be relied upon to set you a new and interesting challenge.
By responding to our customers' needs, we continually develop as a business. From those early days with our respectable fleet of utility vehicles, we've grown into one of the most impressive vehicle hire businesses in the North West. With a remarkable array of vehicles at our customers' disposal, including small two-man vans, a wide array of cranes & lifting equipment, secure & convenient storage facilities, and quite a few trucks that would put those old 24 tonners in the shade.
