Faraday Tracing Bureau was originally formed in 1966 by Derek de Souza and two other partners. In 1973, it changed to the limited company it is today making it the longest established specialist tracing agency in the UK. At that time, its main focus was on tracing missing debtors and absconders. FTB’s portfolio of clients quickly grew as it established long-term working relationships with many of the UK’s most high profile company’s such as Barclays Bank. Unique and effective, the high quality tracing services provided the perfect solution to a costly problem for retailers and credit facilitators alike.
As leaders in their field and with an enviable reputation, in the mid1990’s and after the endowment mis-selling scandal, FTB made a decision to literally turn the focus of its business on its head. It shifted from tracing missing debtors to finding missing beneficiaries. Pensions funds and administrators faced the huge challenge of maintaining accurate pensioner records and FTB realized that its tracing expertise and experience could easily be adapted for the pensions industry. It could provide the perfect solution to address the key areas of concern for pensions administrators including out of date contact details and issues of fraud.
From the early 2000’s to present day, FTB has continued to build on its success partnering with businesses in the pensions sector. It has gained recognition for its expertise, accuracy, speed and integrity. FTB remains one of the leading specialist tracing agencies in the UK.
A Cranfield School of Management alumni, Ian has been in the tracing business now for 27 years, having taken over the helm at FTB in 1998 when his father retired. Since then, as Managing Director, he’s built a highly professional team around him. Ian has also moved the company to an executive suite of offices in South Croydon, Surrey.
Intent on keeping its services in house, Ian was instrumental in the implementation of a sophisticated computerised system to manage the complexities of the tracing processes. Today, this enables FTB to handle the input and screening of the numerous data sets required to complete the company’s services. Having met the stringent guidelines to receive direct DDRI access, data security is a priority for Ian. FTB is endorsed by the ISO and has achieved certification.
Over the past 20 years, Ian has overseen the development of FTB’s portfolio of products and services tailored to the pensions industry. From tracing missing beneficiaries to database maintenance and electronic mortality screening (a service he initiated over 14 years ago), FTB was first to market with this popular product. Further, with the intention to keep clients compliant with the Pension Regulators guidelines, FTB’s product range now represents essential services for the life and pensions industry.
Over the course of his 13 years with FTB, Chris has gained an in-depth knowledge of the tracing business and also has a great understanding of the needs of pension scheme administrators. He was instrumental in the introduction of the monthly mortality screening service which is now standard within the industry. Chris’s expertise includes beneficiary or deferred member tracing, mortality screening and data cleansing. He is able to advise on appropriate solutions to keep clients regulatory compliant which, in the long term, help schemes make significant savings.

Jill is FTB’s tracing expert. What she doesn’t know about the tracing process probably hasn’t been invented yet!
Debbie has been with FTB for over 20 years and has tremendous knowledge of both the tracing and mortality screening systems. She is an Excel expert, dealing daily with database and spreadsheet administration in addition to authenticating client reports following the screening process. She has also experienced first-hand changing client needs and the development of FTB products and services to meet the demands of the pensions industry and in particular, the important role that social networks now play within FTB’s tracing process. Debbie works closely with Jill to maintain FTB’s high level of client care.
