Payne's Nurseries (Towcester) Ltd. has been established in Towcester since 1945. It is a third generation family firm and one of the oldest still surviving in Towcester.
The company was founded when Mr and Mrs Clarence Payne (hence Payne's Nurseries) were employed to manage the nursery. They soon bought the business together with their daughter Marguerite and son in law Talbot and Payne's Nurseries was created. Currently the nursery is run by Marguerite (still there after 67 years!) and two of her sons Ian and Paul.
Over the past 60 years the nurseries have changed in many ways. Originally the nursery grew tomatoes and cucumbers for the local markets with a floristry department which became more and more important. In the 1960's the nursery moved into growing flowers and pot plants to supply the ever growing floristry and retail side of the business. In the late 60's a new block of aluminium glasshouses were built to accommodate the growing of more cut flowers. During the 70's and 80's all the old glasshouses were replaced with modern aluminium glasshouses and the current shop was built to replace the old conservatory which had acted as a shop until then. Improvements to the nurseries continue to this day.
Easter 1998 was a nightmare for the company as the whole site was hit by devastating floods. Although covered by 3 feet of floodwater overnight, the nursery still managed to open on Good Friday and Easter Saturday, although the floor was a little damp!
The nurseries have diversified into a range of other related products and services. Floristry is still the core of the company and over the years we have supplied flowers for such diverse occasions as Rugby Internationals at Twickenham, horse race meetings, the British Grand Prix at Silverstone and other motor racing events throughout the country. Funeral tributes are a speciality with many hours spent on constructing special shapes. Wedding work has provided us with some spectacular settings to work in both locally and as far a field as Wales. We also stock a wide range of cut flowers ranging from the simple to the exotic with all the floristry accessories you could want to create your own arrangements. The nursery has always had a comprehensive range of trees and shrubs and a wealth of experience and knowledge to help you choose exactly the right ones for your garden. Throughout the seasons we stock seed potatoes, seeds, young vegetable plants, bedding plants, hanging basket plants, pots and containers - empty or pre planted, bulbs and xmas trees from 3 to 17 ft. We also carry a range of coal, logs and gas, and wild bird products
